INEC fixes date for Zamfara supplementary poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled a supplementary election for Thursday, August 21, in Kaura-Namoda South Constituency, Zamfara State.

State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Mahmuda Isah, announced the date during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau. He assured political parties and voters that the commission had taken sufficient measures to guarantee a smooth and credible process.

The supplementary poll follows the earlier declaration of the Kaura-Namoda South by-election as inconclusive by Returning Officer Professor Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University Gusau. He explained that the margin between the leading party and the runner-up was smaller than the number of Permanent Voter Cards collected in polling units where elections were cancelled, making a supplementary vote necessary.

INEC urged all stakeholders, security agencies, and political parties to cooperate fully to ensure the success of the election.

Meanwhile, the Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected allegations by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that it used military personnel to intimidate voters during the by-election.

APC Publicity Secretary Yusuf Idris dismissed the claims as baseless, stressing that security operatives were deployed only to maintain order and prevent electoral malpractice. He accused the PDP of tarnishing the image of security agencies to discredit the process, adding that the large turnout of voters for the APC candidate showed the party’s popularity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
