INEC records 69,376 voter sign-ups in seven hours

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that 69,376 prospective voters pre-registered online within seven hours of opening the continuous voter registration (CVR).

Sam Olumekun, Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, revealed this in a statement on Monday.

He explained that the registration portal went live at 8:30 am and by 3:30 pm had already recorded 69,376 pre-registrations.

Of the registrants, 33,803 (48.7 per cent) are male, while 35,573 (51.3 per cent) are female. Young people aged 18 to 34 make up 48,033, representing 69.2 per cent of the total.

The Commission confirmed that the portal remains available 24 hours daily at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org.

INEC will commence in-person registration on Monday, 25 August 2025, at 811 state and local government offices nationwide between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm on weekdays. This will allow those who prefer the physical option to register and online applicants to complete their registration. Both options will run concurrently throughout the CVR period.

From next week, the Commission will issue weekly updates on CVR, with detailed breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation and disability.

INEC emphasised that only Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered are eligible. Double or multiple registration constitutes an offence, though inter-state and intra-state transfers, as well as replacement of lost or damaged voter cards, are permitted during the CVR.
