Nigeria has been placed under increased scrutiny by the United States over alleged violations of religious freedom under the International Religious Freedom Act.
The designation could expose the country to possible sanctions or other policy actions by the US government.
However, the federal government rejected the allegation, maintaining that Nigerians of different faiths coexist peacefully.
The government argued that insecurity across the country is largely driven by terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities, rather than religious persecution.
In recent months, insecurity has intensified in several parts of the country, with terrorists attacking schools and abducting or killing teachers, pupils, and other civilians.
