Although Nigeria’s passport has fallen to 90th position in the latest Henley Passport Index, Nigerian passport holders can still travel to 44 destinations without securing a visa before departure.
The July 2026 edition of the global ranking, released by Henley & Partners on Tuesday, gave the Nigerian passport a visa-free score of 44.
This means Nigerian citizens can access 44 destinations through visa-free entry, visa on arrival or an electronic visa (e-visa), depending on the immigration requirements of each country.
The Henley Passport Index ranks 199 passports based on the number of destinations their holders can visit without obtaining a visa in advance. The ranking uses data supplied by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Nigeria ranked 90th globally in the latest edition, dropping one place from 89th in the April 2026 ranking. However, its visa-free access score remained unchanged at 44.
Despite the slight decline, Nigeria’s passport has recorded steady progress over the years, improving from 94th position in 2025 and 103rd in 2021.

However, Nigerian travellers should note that entry requirements vary from one destination to another.
While some countries allow visa-free entry, others issue visas on arrival or require travellers to obtain an electronic visa before departure.
