Japa: Don’t leave without valid passports, visas – FG warns Nigerians

The Nigeria Immigration Service has issued a warning over the increasing rate of fraudulent migration schemes and illegal cross-border operations being carried out by criminal groups nationwide, cautioning Nigerians that travelling out of the country without proper documents is unlawful and exposes individuals to serious risks.

According to a statement released on Monday in Abuja by the service’s spokesperson, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, criminal syndicates are exploiting vulnerable people — especially young women — with misleading promises of jobs, education, and improved opportunities abroad. These schemes often result in forced labour, human trafficking, and various forms of abuse.

“It is illegal to leave Nigeria without a valid passport, visa, and other required documents, and doing so poses serious dangers,” the statement said, stressing that legitimate travel procedures cannot bypass approved immigration processes or authorised border points.

The service urged Nigerians to be wary of unsolicited sponsorships, travel funding, or offers of assistance to travel abroad from unknown or unverified individuals, describing such tactics as common methods used by trafficking networks.

The public was also encouraged to verify all travel and recruitment opportunities through the appropriate government channels, avoid agents promoting irregular migration, and report suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the nearest NIS office or relevant security authorities.

In addition, the service appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain alert and educate young people about the dangers associated with irregular migration and human trafficking.

People seeking further information or wishing to report suspicious activities were advised to contact the NIS through its official social media platforms — X, Instagram, and Facebook — using the handle @nigimmigration, or via its 24-hour contact lines and whistleblower channels.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains resolute in its commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and protecting citizens from exploitation,” the statement added.
