The Swedish Migration Agency has outlined five key requirements foreign nationals must meet to obtain a residence permit for studies in Sweden in 2026.
The requirements apply to international students seeking to pursue higher education or other approved study programmes in the country.
Requirements for Sweden’s student residence permit
According to the Swedish Migration Agency, applicants must meet the following conditions before their residence permit can be approved:
- Valid passport
Applicants must hold a valid passport when submitting their residence permit application. - Admission to full-time studies
Applicants must have been admitted to full-time studies in Sweden. For university and college programmes, this generally means studying at least 30 credits per semester. Other approved programmes, such as folk high schools, require a minimum of 20 hours of teaching each week.
Distance-learning programmes do not qualify for the residence permit.
- Payment of tuition fees
Where tuition fees apply, applicants must pay them before submitting their application. The applicant is considered fully admitted once the payment has been confirmed, after which the higher education institution informs the Migration Agency. - Comprehensive health insurance
Students whose studies will last for less than one year must have, or have applied for, comprehensive health insurance covering their entire stay.
The insurance must cover emergency and routine medical care, hospitalisation, emergency dental treatment and medically necessary transportation back to the applicant’s home country.
Students enrolled in programmes lasting at least one year are encouraged to register in Sweden’s population register, which gives them access to the country’s public healthcare and dental services.
- Proof of financial support
Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to support themselves throughout the period covered by their residence permit.
Those travelling with family members must also show that they have enough financial resources to support dependants who cannot support themselves independently.

The requirements apply to foreign nationals who intend to study in Sweden and require a residence permit, which generally includes students from countries outside the European Union.
The Migration Agency advises prospective students to ensure that they have met all the conditions and prepared the required supporting documents before applying.
Being admitted to a Swedish institution alone is not sufficient; applicants must also provide the necessary documentation and evidence of adequate financial resources.
