JAPA: Mali lists nine documents foreigners need to obtain citizenship through marriage

Mali has published a nine-point checklist detailing the documents foreigners must submit when applying for citizenship through marriage to a Malian national.

The requirements are outlined in the Citizenship by Marriage section of the official website of the Mali Embassy in the United States, which provides guidance on the paperwork applicants must complete before their cases can be processed.

Nine documents and requirements for applicants

According to the embassy’s guidelines, applicants must provide the following documents:

  1. Written application: A letter bearing a $10 fiscal stamp, addressed to the Director General of Judicial Affairs and the Seal. The subject must read: “Request for information on the status of my Malian nationality.”
  2. Spouse’s nationality certificate: The original Certificate of Malian Nationality belonging to the Malian spouse, costing $20.
  3. Husband’s name on certificate: Where the Malian spouse is a woman, her husband’s name must appear on her nationality certificate.
  4. Marriage certificate: A certified copy of the marriage certificate, authenticated by the embassy for a fee of $10.
  5. Spouse’s birth certificate: The original birth certificate of the Malian spouse, costing $20.
  6. NINA or consular card: A certified copy of the Malian spouse’s National Identification Number (NINA) card or consular card, costing $10.
  7. Foreign applicant’s birth certificate: The original birth certificate of the foreign spouse.
  8. Foreign applicant’s passport: A certified copy of the applicant’s passport, costing $10.
  9. Children’s birth certificates: Where the marriage has produced children, applicants must submit the original birth certificate of each child, at a cost of $20 per certificate.

The cost of the listed documents can vary depending on an applicant’s family circumstances. The publication estimates that document fees alone could reach $110 or more, excluding any additional administrative charges.

Applicants can consult the Mali Embassy’s official citizenship webpage for the full requirements and fee breakdown.
