New Zealand has introduced two new work visa pathways exclusively for Indian nationals following the entry into force of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on October 20, 2026.
The two Temporary Employment Entry (TEE) visa categories target highly skilled workers and selected professionals in occupations associated with India.
The pathways allow a maximum of 5,000 TEE visa holders to be in New Zealand at any given time, with most available places linked to skilled occupations on the country’s Green List.
Applicants must secure jobs from accredited employers
Applicants must obtain a qualifying job offer from an accredited employer and meet the relevant qualification requirements to be eligible for the visas.
The TEE visas will be valid for three years but will not provide a route to permanent residence.
From November 16, 2026, New Zealand will also extend post-study work rights to Indian graduates who hold PhDs from institutions in the country.
Eligible graduates will be able to obtain post-study work visas lasting up to four years, an increase from the previous three-year limit.
New Zealand’s working holiday scheme and student work rights
Within two years of the FTA taking effect, New Zealand plans to introduce a working holiday scheme for Indian nationals aged between 18 and 30.
The scheme will offer up to 1,000 places annually, allowing successful applicants to work in New Zealand for a maximum of 12 months.
Under the country’s existing student work rules, eligible international students, including Indians, can work up to 25 hours per week while studying.
The agreement also guarantees Indian students a minimum of 20 hours of in-study work per week if New Zealand changes its broader student work policies in the future.
New Zealand’s immigration authority said all new visa pathways established under the agreement would remain subject to the country’s existing immigration rules. Visa holders must continue to meet all applicable requirements throughout their stay.
