[JUST IN]: Bandits kill vice principal, child, one other in Kogi school attack

Bandits attacked Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu in Kabba/Bunu LGA of Kogi State on Wednesday morning, leaving three people dead, including a vice principal and a six-year-old child.

The incident, which occurred around 10 a.m., sparked fear in the community and renewed concerns about insecurity in the area.

According to the Kogi State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Saliu Afusat, the attackers came in large numbers on about 40 motorcycles and were believed to be targeting students and other residents for abduction.

The statement said the Divisional Police Officer of Kabba ‘A’ Division quickly responded after receiving a distress call, mobilising police officers, the Police Mobile Force, and tactical units.

Military personnel and local vigilantes already in the area also joined the operation.

“The combined security operatives engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun duel, forcing the criminals to flee into the surrounding bush.

“Preliminary findings indicate that there is presently no conclusive evidence of a successful mass abduction of students or other residents.”

Investigations into the attack are still ongoing.

Authorities confirmed that the victims include Mr Ganiyu Anifowose, the Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr Sunday Jacob Alhassan (70); and six-year-old Sunday Ayele.

One attacker was reportedly killed during the exchange of fire, while a security operative was injured and is receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police has ordered continued searches in nearby bushes and increased patrols in the area as efforts continue to track down the fleeing suspects. Residents were urged to stay calm and support security agencies with useful information.
