Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging that the ruling party has drifted away from the ideals upon which it was founded.
In a resignation letter dated August 31, 2026, Sylva said he could no longer continue his membership of the party.
The letter, which was electronically delivered to the APC Chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, indicated that the former governor reached the decision after extensive consultations with his family, associates, colleagues and supporters.
“Having consulted widely with my family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers, I wish to formally tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), with immediate effect,” Sylva said in the letter.
Sylva, who described himself as one of the founding members of the APC, recalled his contributions towards the establishment and growth of the party.
The former minister also criticised the party’s leadership and direction, arguing that its current approach to politics had undermined fundamental principles of decency and morality.
Sylva has recently been at the centre of political controversy and is allegedly linked to a coup plot against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He was also declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in November 2025 over allegations of conspiracy and dishonest conversion of $14,859,257 belonging to the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).
The funds were allegedly connected to a refinery project involving Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited.
