Kebbi Governor appoints New Emir of Zuru

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has approved the appointment of Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami as the new Emir of Zuru.

The appointment followed the death of the former Emir, Muhammad Sani Sami Gomo II, who passed away in a London hospital on 16 August 2025.

Presenting the letter of appointment in Zuru on Thursday, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Dutsin-Mari, said the choice was based on the recommendation of the emirship election committee.

He explained that three candidates applied for the throne and were screened by the committee, with Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami emerging with the highest votes.

Dutsin-Mari thanked Governor Idris for approving the appointment and urged the new emir to uphold the trust placed in him. He also advised the royal father to discharge his duties with diligence and in reverence to God.

Meanwhile, Governor Idris criticised former officials of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, insisting they lacked the moral right to fault President Bola Tinubu over security challenges.

Speaking at a special prayer to mark Kebbi State’s 34th anniversary in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday, the governor stressed that insecurity predated the current administration. He noted that the federal government had consistently supported Kebbi in times of crisis.

Citing recent unrest in southern Kebbi, Idris said he sought intervention from the Chief of Defence Staff, who swiftly deployed 10 armoured personnel carriers to the affected areas.

The governor also accused some Abuja-based Kebbi politicians of politicising government efforts to tackle insecurity.
