“Kebbi speaker’s death a painful vacuum” – Idris

Nasir Idris has mourned the death of the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman Zuru, describing it as a major loss to both the state and the country.

Zuru, who represented Zuru constituency and held the traditional title Lifiddan Zuru, passed away on Monday, April 6, in a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been undergoing treatment for a long illness. His death was confirmed by the Clerk of the Assembly, Suleiman Shamaki.

In a condolence message released on Tuesday, Idris said he was deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of a close associate and an important figure in the state’s leadership.

“I have received with profound shock and a heavy heart the painful news of the passing of Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman Zuru.

“He was a committed lawmaker, an outstanding leader, and a true patriot whose devotion, humility, and wisdom distinguished him in service to our state,” the governor said.

The governor noted that the late Speaker played a key role in stabilising the legislature and worked closely with the executive to drive development in the state.

“His death has created a painful vacuum in our leadership. His calm disposition, maturity in handling state affairs, and unwavering commitment to unity and progress will remain indelible in our hearts,” Idris added.

Observers say Zuru’s leadership helped maintain harmony between the legislative and executive arms, with fewer internal conflicts during his tenure, largely due to his ability to build consensus and his deep understanding of the state’s political landscape.

Idris also remarked that the timing of his passing makes the loss even more painful.

“Kebbi has lost one of its finest sons at a time when his experience, counsel, and statesmanship were most needed,” he said.

Tributes have continued to come in from political allies, traditional rulers, and residents of the Zuru Emirate, many of whom described him as approachable, principled, and dedicated to grassroots development.

Born on April 5, 1970, Zuru is survived by his wife and five children.

The governor prayed for the repose of his soul, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, while urging his family, the Assembly, and the people of Kebbi State to remain strong during this period.
