KEDCO demands ₦950m Debt from Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has demanded that Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) pay its outstanding electricity debt of ₦949.88 million as of August 2025 or risk disconnection from the national grid.

In a statement on Monday, KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala, also ordered the immediate payment of ₦108.95 million, the bill for August, within 10 working days.

“The hospital has an outstanding liability of ₦949.88 million as at the end of August. It must settle the August bill of ₦108.95 million in full within 10 working days, or the company will decide on its next action,” Bala warned.

He criticised persistent non-payment, particularly for electricity consumed at the hospital’s residential quarters, which he said undermines KEDCO’s operations.

Bala revealed that the company had previously notified AKTH in an August 12 letter signed by its Chief Commercial Officer, Muhammad Aminu, outlining plans to disconnect staff quarters and non-essential areas over partial settlements.

He stressed that KEDCO prioritised uninterrupted power to the hospital itself, connecting its main campus and critical facilities to the 33KVA Zaria Road feeder, which delivers an average of 22 hours daily under Band A supply.

However, Bala accused hospital management of resisting line separation, insisting staff quarters remain on the same feeder, a stance he said threatens stability and caused a recent outage.

KEDCO reiterated that while essential facilities remain a priority, staff residences may face disconnection unless debts are cleared.

Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital is one of Northern Nigeria’s foremost tertiary health centres, serving thousands of patients across the region.
