Kidnapped NYSC corps member regains freedom after months in captivity

A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps known as Abba has been released after spending weeks in the hands of armed bandits, according to confirmed reports.

Abba was reportedly kidnapped on January 9, 2026, while travelling from Gusau to Sokoto, a route that has seen numerous attacks by armed bandits in recent years.

During his ordeal, his family and well‑wishers lived in fear and uncertainty as they awaited news about his condition. Reports indicate that the kidnappers demanded millions of naira as ransom and also insisted the family hand over a motorcycle (okada) before his release which they did yet they heard nothing about him.

For weeks, concerns ran high after videos and statements circulated on social media, some showing him in captivity and appealing for help, raising public alarm over his safety.

Today, on April 1, 2026, news broke that Abba has finally regained his freedom and has been reunited with his family after a short video call with “D English Alhaji” on social media bringing relief to relatives and Nigerians who have followed the case closely.

While the details of how his release was secured remain unclear and authorities have yet to issue a formal statement, reports confirm that the payment of ransom and the fulfilment of the bandits’ conditions played a role in securing his freedom.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing concerns over insecurity along major travel routes in northern Nigeria, where banditry and kidnappings for ransom have become persistent threats.

Social media users have taken to various platforms to express relief and gratitude over Abba’s safe return, while many continue to call for stronger protection for corps members and travellers across the country.
