The All Progressives Congress in Kwara State has postponed its governorship primary election earlier fixed for Thursday, rescheduling the exercise for Friday, May 22, 2026.
The announcement was contained in an official statement issued in Kwara by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Abdulwaheed Babatunde.
The statement read, “The APC Governorship Primary, earlier scheduled to hold today, Thursday, 21st May 2026, has been postponed.
“The new date for the Governorship Primary is now Friday, 22nd May 2026. All aspirants and party faithful are advised to take note.”
The party did not officially state the reason for the postponement.
State APC chairman Sunday Fagbemi confirmed the development while speaking with journalists.
Fagbemi said, “We don’t have details for the cancellation other than the fact that the team from the national office came and instructed that the election be held tomorrow.”
The postponement came just hours after eight governorship aspirants reportedly stepped down in support of Abdulfatai Seriki, who is widely regarded as the preferred successor of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Seriki reportedly held consultations with fellow aspirants and party stakeholders on Wednesday evening, where participants agreed to support his ambition in the interest of party unity and continuity.
Those said to have endorsed Seriki include Salako Oluwatoyin, Captain Ahmad Mahmoud, Wale Sulaiman, Mohammed Bio, Toyin Alabi, Aisha Patigi, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, and Speaker Yakubu Danladi.
Party leaders at the meeting also reaffirmed their commitment to internal cohesion, peaceful conduct, and issue-based engagement ahead of the primary.
Reports further suggested that additional aspirants could withdraw before the rescheduled election.
The development comes as the APC continues governorship and legislative primaries nationwide ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In several northern states, the party has already produced candidates through direct primaries and consensus arrangements.
In Katsina State, Governor Dikko Radda secured the APC ticket through a consensus process, while in Kano State, Governor Abba Yusuf was recently cleared by the party to seek re-election.
The Kwara APC governorship primary is expected to draw considerable attention as party members prepare to choose their candidate for the 2027 election.
