The Kwara State Government has ordered the demolition of a two-storey building in the Oke Suna area of Ilorin East Local Government Area after inspectors found the structure to be unsafe for habitation.
Authorities also sealed off the property following complaints from residents, who raised concerns that the building could collapse and endanger lives and nearby properties.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency said it carried out an emergency assessment after receiving reports from the community, with the inspection confirming the building posed a significant safety risk.
Residents told government officials that the owner had been alerted several times about the poor condition of the property but allegedly failed to take corrective measures.
Following the inspection, KWEPA General Manager, Jide Aina, directed the owner to immediately begin demolishing the building.
“The condition of the building constitutes a grave danger to public safety. The owner is hereby directed to commence its immediate demolition,” Aina said.
He warned that the state government would carry out the demolition itself if the owner failed to comply.
“Failure to comply with this directive will leave the Kwara State Government with no option but to demolish the structure in the interest of protecting lives and property,” he said.
Aina added that the government would continue to enforce environmental and building safety regulations to prevent avoidable disasters across the state.
“The Kwara State Government remains committed to safeguarding residents through proactive environmental enforcement, strict compliance with safety regulations, and the timely removal of environmental hazards capable of causing avoidable tragedies.
“We encourage residents across the state to continue supporting the government’s efforts by promptly reporting abandoned buildings, distressed structures, environmental nuisances and other environmental hazards to KWEPA for swift intervention,” he added.
