Lagos Assembly majority leader eyes re-election bid

Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Noheem Adams, on Saturday announced his intention to seek re-election in 2027.

Adams unveiled a campaign built on continuity, infrastructural development, and support for President Bola Tinubu’s political leadership in Lagos.

The declaration, held along the Coastal Road corridor in Victoria Island, turned Eti-Osa Constituency I into a display of All Progressives Congress colours, as hundreds of party loyalists, traditional rulers, youth groups, residents’ associations, and political stakeholders gathered under blue, red, and green canopies bearing party insignia. The atmosphere was charged with chants of solidarity as supporters waved banners endorsing Adams as the constituency’s consensus candidate.

What started as a routine political announcement quickly developed into a larger show of strength, blending local development narratives with early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The event also featured a coordinated endorsement of Adams, President Bola Tinubu, and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, with party leaders openly projecting Hamzat as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s successor.

The gathering attracted key APC stakeholders in Eti-Osa, including the party’s Central Working Committee led by Murphy Adetoro, members of the Governance Advisory Council, ward chairmen, local government chairmen, former lawmakers, community leaders, and the Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association.

Speaking at the event, Adams said his decision to seek another term followed what he described as strong pressure from constituents and party leaders who encouraged him to continue representing the area.

“About a month ago, the working community leaders called me to come and explain to all the leaders what I have done within my years in the House of Assembly,” he said.

He added that he presented the projects he had facilitated in Eti-Osa Constituency I, insisting that the area had benefited significantly from democratic dividends in Lagos and Nigeria.

“The president of Nigeria today, Eti-Osa is his immediate constituency, he lives here with us.

“The first thing he did as president was to come and construct a coastal road for us. We had witnessed traffic lockdown from Lekki-Epe Expressway for five years. Today, I can report to you officially… no traffic anywhere in Eti-Osa. The courtesy is of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Adams stated.

The coastal highway project, though controversial in some quarters, was repeatedly highlighted at the rally as a key symbol of federal influence in Lagos and the constituency’s closeness to power.

Adams also praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for responding to local concerns, noting that many development requests had been addressed over time.

He cited road rehabilitation, solar-powered street lighting, and other infrastructure projects as evidence of progress in the constituency.

“Today, the properties of Eti-Osa are appreciated. We are enjoying peaceful coexistence in all administrations. We are all happy in Eti-Osa Constituency I, courtesy of the president, courtesy of the governor, and courtesy of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.”

However, the event went beyond Adams’ declaration, serving as a wider political rally aimed at consolidating support ahead of the next election cycle.

Party leaders used the platform to reaffirm support for Tinubu and the APC structure in Lagos, repeatedly expressing confidence in electoral success in 2027.

Murphy Adetoro described the gathering as a preview of the party’s primaries, saying:

“Thus, on the day of the primaries, we will all be behind him,” adding that endorsements from party structures had already been formally submitted.

He also stressed ongoing support for national and state leaders within the APC framework.

Former lawmaker Yahaya Dosunmu further suggested that Eti-Osa could play a more prominent role in the state’s political hierarchy in the coming years, drawing applause from supporters.

Adams concluded by reaffirming his ambition, stating that his candidacy was backed by strong grassroots support.

“This time around,” he said, “we are going to win our presidential election. We are going to win our House of Representatives election. And we are going to win our House of Assembly election.”
