Lagos halts all land reclamation projects

The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of all reclamation projects across the state, citing severe environmental risks.

In a statement on Thursday, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the ministry had observed a surge in reclamation activities on wetlands, floodplains, and lagoons in areas including Parkview, Banana Island, Osborne, Ikoyi, Victoria Island Extension, Lekki, Ajah, Oworonshoki, and parts of Ikorodu.

He warned that many of these projects lacked Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approvals and drainage clearance, heightening risks of flooding, erosion, and ecosystem damage.

The government has directed all reclamation activities—whether approved or not—to stop immediately. Approved projects must undergo fresh documentation and monitoring, while ongoing and planned ones must complete the EIA process and secure clearance from the ministry.

Defaulters face sanctions, including site decommissioning, demolition of illegal fills, prosecution, and arrest. “Enough is enough,” Wahab declared.
