Lagos seals i-Fitness gym over alleged sewage discharge

The Lagos State Government has sealed an i-Fitness Gym facility located around Jakande Roundabout in the Lekki Peninsula area of Eti-Osa over the alleged discharge of raw sewage into public drainage channels.

The enforcement action was carried out on Tuesday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), according to a post shared on the official X account of the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

LSWMO said the facility was shut down for allegedly directing untreated sewage into public drains, an act the government described as both an environmental hazard and a public nuisance.

According to the agency, the practice poses significant health risks and contravenes environmental regulations.

The office noted that the enforcement action was necessary to ensure compliance with wastewater management laws across the state.

“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Tuesday 23rd June, 2026, sealed-off , Jakande Round-about, Lekki Peninsula, Eti-Osa, Lagos, over indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into public drains via pipe, thereby causing public nuisance and environmental pollution as well as endangering human health.”

The state government reiterated its call for residents and businesses to comply with approved wastewater management practices, warning that violations would attract sanctions and possible prosecution under existing environmental laws.

Officials also urged organisations and individuals to adopt environmentally responsible practices to reduce pollution and safeguard public health.

“Lagos State government reiterates the need for the public to adhere strictly to proper wastewater management practices, noting that any individual or organisation found contravening environmental regulations will be meted with appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with the enabling laws,” the statement partly read.

The closure of the gym is the latest in a series of enforcement actions by the Lagos State Government aimed at tackling environmental infractions and promoting compliance with sanitation and wastewater regulations.
