Lagos to pay residents for recyclable waste

The Lagos State Government has urged residents to convert household waste into cash as part of efforts to strengthen recycling and promote a cleaner environment.

According to reports, the “Cash for Trash’’ initiative, managed by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, has been running for years to encourage waste-to-wealth practices.

The programme enables residents to earn money by exchanging recyclable materials, helping to curb the effects of climate change in the state.

In a statement and video shared on Monday via his X handle, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the scheme rewards residents with cash every Thursday for submitting recyclables.

Wahab said the Lagos Waste Management Authority’s Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, demonstrating how communities can convert recyclable waste into income.

The statement read, “Did you know your trash can turn into cash? Our #Lawma_gov Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen!

“We’re rewarding residents every Thursday for helping us keep Lagos clean and green. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city!

“Get involved and see the value in your waste.”

The accompanying video posted by the commissioner shows LAWMA agents weighing bags of sorted plastics on portable scales and disbursing cash rewards to participants.
