The Lagos State Government has begun plans to roll out special vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities as part of efforts to promote inclusion and make transportation more accessible.
The initiative was discussed during a meeting between officials of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, where both organisations agreed to work together on the project.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, said the initiative supports Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
“The specialised number plates will improve recognition, accessibility and ease of movement for persons with disabilities throughout the state. The initiative also aligns with the principles of inclusive governance,” Muri-Okunola said.
He explained that the agency had already opened discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps and would begin the necessary procedures required to introduce the new number plates in collaboration with LASODA.
Also speaking, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the meeting was organised to begin consultations on developing a vehicle identification system that meets the needs of persons with disabilities.
“This initiative should cover all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers.
“The system will improve identification, accessibility and support for members of the disability community,” Oyetunde-Lawal said.
She added that the proposed number plates would further strengthen the state’s drive toward an inclusive society by ensuring persons with disabilities enjoy equal recognition and opportunities.
“The proposed number plates underscore the government’s commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
“We call on all stakeholders to embrace inclusion as a shared responsibility and support policies that advance the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities,” she said.
Both agencies expressed their commitment to seeing the project through, noting that it aligns with the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which seeks to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, prevent discrimination and promote equal opportunities in every sector.
The meeting was attended by senior management officials and directors from both LASODA and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.
