Academic and non-academic staff of Lagos State University (LASU) have commenced an indefinite strike action over welfare-related issues and other unresolved matters with the university management.
Though full details of the workers’ grievances were not immediately available at the time of this report, the strike was confirmed to have begun on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
In a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, dated July 31, 2025, the leadership of the four unions within the institution stated that the industrial action would persist until all their demands were fully addressed.
The unions, operating under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee (JAC)—which includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT)—said the decision to embark on the strike was reached during an Emergency Congress of the committee.
In the letter titled “Notice of Indefinite Strike Action,” and signed by union leaders including Prof. Ibrahim Bakare (Chairman, ASUU-LASU), Sylvester Idowu (Secretary, ASUU-LASU), Oluwaseyi Lawal (Chairman, SSANU-LASU), and Waheed Majekodunmi (Secretary, SSANU-LASU), the unions announced the commencement of the strike, directing all staff across LASU’s main and affiliated campuses—including LASUCOM and LASU Epe Campus—to withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts immediately.
The unions emphasized that the strike would remain in effect until their demands were met by the relevant authorities.
