LG boss urges fish market traders to prioritise sanitation

The Chairman of Epe Local Government Area in Lagos State, Ms Surah Animashaun, has called on traders at Aiyetoro and Oluwo fish markets to always maintain a clean and hygienic trading environment.

She advised the traders to uphold cleanliness standards and comply with proper environmental sanitation practices within the markets.

Animashaun made the call on Saturday during an inspection visit to some market locations in Epe, stressing that clean markets are essential for safeguarding public health.

According to her, poor sanitation can trigger the spread of communicable diseases, particularly in fish markets where waste disposal requires special attention.

The council chairman urged traders to dispose of refuse correctly, refrain from indiscriminate waste dumping, and ensure regular cleaning of their stalls and surrounding areas.

She emphasised that environmental hygiene is a shared responsibility and encouraged everyone to actively contribute to maintaining a healthy environment.

Animashaun also cautioned that the local government would strictly enforce existing environmental regulations, including imposing penalties on violators.

She reassured traders of the council’s dedication to providing sufficient waste disposal facilities and carrying out routine monitoring to ensure a clean and healthy market atmosphere.

In addition, the council boss warned traders against roadside trading to prevent accidents, noting that several road mishaps had occurred around the Aiyetoro market axis.

“We, therefore, urge traders to stop selling on the roadside,” she said.
