Lions Club pushes to extend humanitarian outreach to rural communities

Lions Clubs International, District 404B-4, Nigeria, has called for broader humanitarian efforts nationwide, pledging to expand health and community-based interventions, especially in underserved areas.

The District Governor, Adebowale Afolayan, made this known in a statement on Thursday during the investiture and charter presentation of the Abeokuta Premium Lions Club.

Afolayan described the growth of Lions Clubs as a strategic move to reach neglected communities and provide people-focused services.

He highlighted key achievements in the health sector, including the construction of a 20-room accommodation facility at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, and the establishment of a 15-point dialysis centre at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

“Our work is guided by a simple but powerful mission—service to humanity. We have made it a priority to focus on underserved communities, as the social well-being of rural dwellers must be given adequate attention,” he said.

He added that the organisation remains committed to making a meaningful impact across Nigeria and encouraged well-meaning individuals to collaborate with it to reach more communities.

Afolayan emphasised that humanitarian development requires collective effort, noting that even small contributions can lead to lasting impact.

He expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated club would boost the Lions’ ability to respond to community needs, particularly in healthcare, youth development, and social welfare.

In his acceptance speech, the Charter President of the Abeokuta Premium Lions Club, Shafih Amusa, reaffirmed the club’s dedication to service and partnership with public institutions.

“Service to humanity remains the heartbeat of Lions Clubs International. With a clear agenda and structured programmes, we are poised to support government initiatives and drive sustainable community development,” Amusa said.

He called for stronger collaboration between government and humanitarian organisations, stressing that real progress is best achieved through partnership.

Amusa also urged authorities to prioritise citizens’ welfare by tackling unemployment, ensuring timely pension payments, and strengthening social support systems.

“When we work together, we can build a safer and more inclusive society. That is the path to a brighter Nigeria,” he added.
