Many feared dead, abducted as gunmen attack Ebonyi community

Several persons have reportedly been killed and abducted in Okporojo Community, Oso Edda, within Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, following an attack by suspected gunmen.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday afternoon, January 29, 2026, at about 4:00 p.m.

According to reports, unidentified armed men stormed the community in the late afternoon, torching houses, while many residents were allegedly killed and others taken away during the assault.

It was further alleged that more than five persons were beheaded, with the assailants reportedly carting away their severed heads.

In a video circulating on social media, several houses were seen engulfed in flames as distressed residents appealed to the state government and security agencies for urgent intervention.

Sources disclosed that the attack may be connected to a long-standing land dispute between Oso Edda in Edda Local Government Area and neighbouring Amasiri in Afikpo Local Government Area, with both communities laying claim to ancestral ownership of the contested land.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Ebonyi State Government nor the Ebonyi State Police Command has issued an official statement on the incident.
