Medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples begins Monday in Kano

The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced preparations to begin health screening for about 3,000 intending couples as part of arrangements for the state’s upcoming mass wedding programme.

Speaking on Sunday, the board’s Deputy Commander General, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, said the exercise is scheduled to commence on Monday across all 24 local government areas of the state.

He explained that the screening will involve equal numbers of male and female participants, who must undergo compulsory medical checks before being cleared for marriage.

“The screening will commence on Monday, 8th June, 2026, God willing. The couples comprising 1,500 females and 1,500 males will undergo the mandatory screening to ascertain their health status,” he said.

According to him, the process is being organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the State Agency for the Control of AIDS, and will test participants for conditions such as HIV, hepatitis B, drug use, genotype compatibility, and other sexually transmitted infections.

He added that all registered couples are expected to report to Hisbah offices in their respective local government areas, warning that anyone who fails to participate may be removed from the programme.

“After that, only those who pass the health screening will qualify,” Aminudeen added.

The mass wedding initiative, reintroduced by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is aimed at supporting vulnerable families and addressing social issues such as prostitution and other related challenges.
