NAF deploys surveillance aircraft to aid rescue of abducted Oyo pupils, teachers

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified efforts to support the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State by deploying aerial surveillance assets to assist security operations.

The development was disclosed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, and the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh.

According to a statement issued by NAF spokesman Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Air Force swiftly deployed a surveillance aircraft immediately after the abduction was reported on May 15, providing intelligence support for ongoing search-and-rescue operations.

Governor Makinde said information gathered from the aerial surveillance missions has been assisting security agencies in monitoring developments and coordinating efforts aimed at securing the release of the victims.

He appealed to residents to remain patient and continue supporting security agencies, assuring them that every available resource is being deployed to ensure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.

The governor also commended the Nigerian Air Force for its prompt intervention and sustained support, noting that the surveillance platform was made available while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial assets are still being assembled at the NAF base in Lagos.

According to him, the state acquired the aircraft following consultations with the Air Force to ensure access to technical expertise, maintenance support and pilot training. He expressed confidence that the platforms would significantly strengthen security operations across Oyo State and neighbouring states once they become fully operational.

Representing the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Suleh reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Air Force to supporting efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims and tackle security challenges across the country.

He also praised the Oyo State Government for its continued support for NAF projects and infrastructure development within the state.

The victims, comprising pupils and teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School, were abducted during a deadly attack by bandits on May 15.

The incident has generated widespread concern, triggering protests by the Nigeria Union of Teachers and civil society groups, who have demanded urgent action to secure the victims’ freedom.

One of the abducted teachers was reportedly killed while in captivity.

The abduction also prompted intervention from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and authorised the deployment of a special rescue team to support efforts aimed at rescuing the victims.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that the abducted teachers and pupils are rescued alive.
