NAFDAC busts illegal herbal product factory in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, and arrested the company’s manager for questioning over the use of falsified registration numbers on its products.

In a statement shared on its official X account, the agency said the discovery followed a report published by The Guardian on October 10, 2026, which raised concerns about herbal products bearing fake NAFDAC registration numbers.

“A NAFDAC investigative team conducted surveillance and subsequently discovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing NAFDAC Registration Number A7-1827L,” the statement said.

Further checks on the agency’s NAPAMS portal showed that the registration number belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, indicating that it had been fraudulently used on the herbal products.

NAFDAC said the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer was absent when the investigative team carried out the operation.

However, the company manager was arrested for further interrogation as investigations into the suspected illegal manufacturing activities continued.

“The company’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer was absent during the operation, while the company manager was arrested for further interrogation,” the statement added.

The agency urged members of the public to provide credible information about suspected illegal manufacturing operations to help it identify and address such activities.

NAFDAC advised the public to report relevant information through its call centre and email.
