The Nigerian Navy has finalised plans to establish a naval base in Yauri, located in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
A delegation representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, made this known during a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.
Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, who led the delegation, said the move is part of the Navy’s strategy to extend its maritime security operations beyond the coastal waters into inland areas.
He explained that while the Navy already holds statutory responsibility for maritime operations offshore, the new base in Yauri would help secure the River Niger and bolster national security efforts in the hinterland.
Describing the River Niger as a vital national asset, Nwatu said it supports agriculture, power generation, and livelihoods. However, he warned that criminal groups are increasingly exploiting the river to smuggle arms and escalate insecurity.
“Sadly, despite the river’s many benefits, criminals have turned it into a corridor for illicit activities. It has become a convergence point for smuggling and insecurity,” he noted.
“In addition to our existing base in Niger State, we consider it necessary to establish a presence in Kebbi to ensure full security coverage along the River Niger.”
Nwatu expressed confidence that, with the support of the Kebbi State Government and its people, the initiative would strengthen security in the Northwest.
Governor Nasir Idris described the development as a timely and strategic intervention, especially given the insecurity in southern Kebbi.
“We have never had a naval base in Kebbi. We’re truly grateful that the Chief of the Naval Staff has approved one for Yauri. The River Niger here must be secured with a strong military presence,” the governor stated.
He noted Kebbi’s geographical importance, highlighting its borders with Niger Republic and Benin Republic, and pointed out the limitations of the current security arrangements in the area.
“At the moment, we only have a few marine police officers. With rising threats from neighbouring countries and internal banditry, we welcome this expanded naval presence,” he said.
Governor Idris assured the Navy of full cooperation from the state government, including temporary accommodation for officers, pending the construction of a permanent naval facility.
