NDC launches nationwide congresses before May 9 convention

The Nigeria Democratic Congress on Friday commenced its first nationwide congresses as part of preparations for its maiden national convention scheduled for May 9, 2026.

The development was announced in a statement issued by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, who outlined the activities lined up across the country.

According to him, ward and polling unit congresses are expected to hold between May 1 and 2, while local government congresses have been fixed for May 4.

The party added that the exercises would climax with its inaugural National Convention in Abuja on May 9, where major decisions and leadership structures of the party are expected to be finalised.

“On the back of the ongoing congresses, the NDC is also set for its maiden national party convention, which is scheduled to hold in Abuja on the 9th of May, 2026.

“Preparations for the convention have been concluded by the planning committee. All is now set for the big event, which shall host accredited party faithfuls as well as the relevant INEC officials who are expected to monitor and observe the conduct of the Convention as mandated by the Electoral Act.

Security agencies have also been put on notice to ensure adequate security and safety for accredited party faithfuls, officials and other guests,” Abdulsalam stated.

The party leadership also expressed optimism that its state and national officials would ensure the congresses are conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution and laid-down guidelines.
