The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Borno State has withdrawn its dismissal notice against one of its House of Assembly candidates, Mohammed Bunu, who was earlier sanctioned for allegedly campaigning for African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The party had issued a dismissal notice to Bunu in a letter dated October 25, 2026, accusing him of conduct allegedly inconsistent with its constitution, rules and disciplinary principles.
The letter cited campaign materials bearing the ADC logo, the slogan “SABON TAFIYA, SABON SALO,” and photographs and names of Atiku Abubakar and Mohammed Bunu.
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, the party announced that its state reconciliation committee had completed its investigation into the alleged anti-party activities and cleared the lawmaker.
The statement, signed by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Aliyu Balarabe, disclosed that a seven-member committee was constituted on October 25, 2026, to investigate the allegations and ensure a fair hearing.
According to Balarabe, the committee reviewed reports from Hausari Ward and MMC structures and also heard from Bunu before concluding that he was not guilty.
“Findings: After examining reports from Hausari Ward and MMC structures and hearing Hon. Bunu, the committee found him not guilty. The allegations were not established,” he said.
He further explained that Article 19 of the party’s constitution reserves the power to confirm a member’s expulsion exclusively for the national convention.
“Any notice from a lower organ without such confirmation cannot be treated as valid expulsion,” he stressed.
Consequently, the party formally withdrew the earlier dismissal notice against Bunu.
Balarabe reaffirmed that the candidate remained a recognised member of the NDC and urged members of the public to disregard the previous dismissal notice.
