The newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has assumed control of the state police command, promising to strengthen security and protect residents, businesses and visitors.
Ama officially took over on Monday, becoming the 36th Commissioner of Police to head the Anambra Command.
His appointment followed the retirement of AIG Ikioye Orutugu, the former state police commissioner, who left the Nigeria Police Force after attaining the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.
The Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved the redeployment that brought Ama to Anambra.
Confirming the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the new commissioner was coming into the command with extensive experience acquired from more than three decades in the police service.
Before his latest posting, Ama was the Commissioner of Police in charge of Intelligence and Training at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja. He had earlier served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.
The statement read, “The Anambra State Police Command today, August 10, 2026, announces the assumption of duty of CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, as the new Commissioner of Police in the State. CP Nnanna Oji Ama takes over the leadership of the Command following the retirement of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
“The new Commissioner of Police is a highly experienced and accomplished senior police officer with over three decades of distinguished service in the Nigeria Police Force. Prior to his deployment to Anambra State, he served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja, having previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same office.
“A native of Ekata in Edda LGA of Ebonyi State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Jos. He commenced his police career as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and trained at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, before embarking on a wide-ranging career spanning intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.”
Ama’s previous postings have included the Federal Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja, Nnewi Area Command in Anambra, Zone 9 CID in Umuahia and various Police Mobile Force formations across the country.
He has also served in command and investigative roles in the Federal Capital Territory, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and other locations.
The police said his professional development included several local and international courses focused on leadership, intelligence, investigation, tactical operations and strategic policing.
The statement further said, “The new Commissioner has also undergone several professional and strategic training programmes both within and outside the country, including Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at NIPSS, Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; Incident Site Commander’s Course by the British High Commission College of Policing; Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management Course; Advanced Detective Course; and various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.
“CP Nnanna Oji Ama has been recognised for his professional courage and operational effectiveness, including a Commendation Award for uncommon bravery, courage and gallantry following the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during a shootout with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, in 2007.”
The new commissioner is also affiliated with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
Speaking after taking charge, Ama said his administration would focus on preserving the security improvements already recorded in the state while creating stronger partnerships with other security bodies and community stakeholders.
“Upon assumption of office, CP Nnanna Oji Ama expressed his commitment to consolidating the existing security gains in Anambra State and strengthening collaboration among the Police, other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders.
“The CP further assured the people of Anambra State of the Command’s renewed determination to protect lives and property, prevent and combat crime, uphold the rule of law, and ensure a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and businesses across the state,” the statement added.
