Nigeria demands probe over killings in South Africa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has called for a full investigation and autopsy reports following the killing of two Nigerian citizens in South Africa.

Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa disclosed this after a meeting between the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dunoma Ahmed, and South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner, Lesoli Machele.

Ebienfa said Nigeria’s diplomatic mission is closely monitoring the situation, noting that the attacks have heightened tension within the Nigerian community in South Africa. He added that the government is demanding access to autopsy reports and relevant case files to ensure transparency.

The South African authorities have condemned the killings and pledged a full investigation, although no arrests have been made so far.

Nigeria also urged the implementation of an existing memorandum of understanding between both countries on early warning mechanisms aimed at preventing such incidents.

On possible evacuation, Ebienfa revealed that about 130 Nigerians have expressed interest in returning home, with documentation currently ongoing. He noted that the repatriation process is, for now, self-funded, though the Federal Government may step in to assist those unable to cover travel costs.

South African officials have assured that those responsible for the killings will be brought to justice as investigations continue.
