Nigeria not where it should be despite uninterrupted democratic rule — Gov Bago

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has expressed concern that despite Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999, the nation has not achieved its full potential.

The Governor conveyed this sentiment through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day on June 12.

According to him, there is a need for leaders to intensify efforts to drive the country toward economic development.

He called for continuous electoral reforms, greater civic participation, and the strengthening of democratic institutions to protect the vulnerable, ensure justice, and provide equal opportunities for all. He emphasized that such measures would help advance democracy in Nigeria.

The Governor also encouraged Nigerians to reflect on the progress made, renew their commitment to the democratic process, and uphold the principles of democracy.

According to him, June 12 represents “the victory of the collective will of the people over dictatorship,” reminding every patriotic Nigerian of the struggles, sacrifices, aspirations, and resilience of past heroes and heroines.

He further highlighted that democracy has fostered transparency and accountability in governance, vibrant political competition, diverse viewpoints, and increased civic engagement, among other benefits.

Reassuring the people of Niger State, the Governor promised to deliver more dividends of democracy through responsible leadership and inclusive governance as part of his New Niger agenda.

He also called for continuous prayers, support, and understanding from the people as he reiterated his commitment to building a more secure, transformed, and prosperous state.

“I urge you all to continue to pray for leaders at all levels for a purposeful leadership. I reaffirm my commitment to the New Niger project, which is a possibility,” the Governor stated.
