Nigeria is preparing to take delivery of 24 M-346 fighter jets from Italy as part of a major defence procurement programme.
In November 2023, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) finalised an agreement with Messrs Leonardo, an Italian defence manufacturer, for the supply of the 24 M-346 aircraft.
The contract, estimated at about €1.2 billion, is regarded as the biggest military aircraft acquisition in West Africa to date.
Beyond the aircraft themselves, the agreement includes 25 years of logistical support, with Leonardo retaining exclusive responsibility for maintenance operations.
The M-346 is equipped with seven external hardpoints and is capable of integrating air-to-air and ground-to-air munitions, as well as targeting pods linked to helmet-mounted display systems.
Production of the first six jets is already underway in Italy, with three scheduled for delivery in 2025 and the remaining aircraft expected to arrive in phases through mid-2026.
Hasan Abubakar, who was the Chief of Air Staff at the time the deal was signed, noted that the aircraft would enhance pilot training and significantly improve operational effectiveness across a range of mission profiles.
The acquisition forms part of Nigeria’s wider strategy to boost national security, especially in the northeast where forces are combating Boko Haram and Islamic State elements, as well as addressing widespread kidnappings and banditry across the country.
