President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has expressed optimism that Nigeria will surmount banditry and other security challenges from 2026 onward, calling on citizens to unite in the pursuit of peace, harmony, and national progress.
Akpabio made the remarks during a prayer and fasting programme held in honour of the Akpabio family at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Cathedral of Unity, Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
He urged Nigerians to put aside their differences, embrace peace, and promote unity within their families, communities, and the nation at large, noting that meaningful and sustainable development can only thrive in a peaceful environment.
“I want to wish all Nigerians a very prosperous and peaceful new year. I want to assure Nigerians that the new year will usher in renewed peace in our country,” the Senate President said.
Drawing inspiration from the Christmas celebration, Akpabio linked the birth of Jesus Christ to renewed hope for the nation, expressing confidence that Nigeria would overcome its security woes.
“By reason of the birth of Jesus Christ, Nigerians will be redeemed from banditry and insurgency in the new year and beyond,” he stated.
The Senate President further called on Nigerians, irrespective of political leanings, to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to address insecurity across the country.
He also expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation with international partners would strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to combat banditry and insurgency.
Akpabio underscored the role of family unity in fostering peace and development, stressing that cohesion at the family level contributes significantly to stability in society.
In her address, the wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, appealed to members of the Akpabio family to support one another, overlook personal differences, and live in love and unity.
Similarly, the head of the Greater Akpabio Family, Chief Ekan Akpabio, called on family members to continue backing Senator Akpabio as a representative of the family, Essien Udim Local Government Area, and Akwa Ibom State.
He also encouraged family members occupying public positions to remain connected to their roots and prioritise the welfare of their relatives.
The annual prayer and fasting service, observed every December 26, serves as a platform for the Akpabio family to express gratitude to God and pray for peace, unity, and progress in Nigeria.
