NIPOST imposes $80 fee on US parcels

Nigerians will now pay $80, or its naira equivalent, for every package sent to the United States, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) announced on Friday.

In a circular, the agency said the measure will take effect from 29 August 2025, although letters and documents remain exempt from the mandatory prepaid customs fee.

NIPOST explained that the decision followed a US Executive Order suspending de minimis exemptions for all postal shipments worldwide.

“With effect from 29 August 2025, and in compliance with the Executive Order, all postal items to the United States, except for letters and documents, will now attract a prepaid customs duty of USD $80 (or its naira equivalent) at the point of acceptance in Nigeria,” the statement read.

The agency added that global logistics are also being affected, with airlines and cargo carriers adopting more cautious measures in handling US-bound shipments. This, it warned, could extend transit and processing times and cause delivery delays.

It further noted that all US-bound parcels will face customs checks on arrival.

“NIPOST is actively engaging with the Universal Postal Union, US Customs and Border Protection, and our airline partners to minimise disruptions and safeguard customer experience. We remain committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient postal and courier services despite this global regulatory change,” the agency said.
