NPFL secures $7.5m three-year title sponsorship deal, clubs to receive 60%

Nigeria’s top-flight football league, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has secured a $7.5 million three-year title sponsorship agreement with EUROMATCH, in a move expected to boost the financial strength and commercial prospects of domestic football.

The deal, worth $2.5 million per season, was unveiled in Abuja on Wednesday, with EUROMATCH announced as the new title sponsor of the NPFL.

Under the agreement, participating clubs will receive 60 per cent of the sponsorship revenue, potentially providing additional funds for players’ wages, welfare and other club operations.

NPFL Chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, described the agreement as a major milestone in the league’s efforts to achieve greater commercial viability and international competitiveness.

He stressed that players should remain at the centre of the league’s development, while administrators focus on creating an environment that allows the talents on the pitch to thrive.

“We want the world to know our players. Let our league be known. Those of us behind the scene, let our work reflect and let our work show,” he said.

Elegbeleye added that the increased revenue could improve players’ welfare and salaries while making it more attractive for talented footballers to pursue their careers within Nigeria rather than seeking opportunities overseas.

The agreement comes amid renewed calls for the NPFL to reduce its reliance on government funding and limited commercial revenue by adopting a more sustainable business model capable of attracting local and international investment.

Sunday Dare, former Minister of Sports and Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, said the agreement showed that efforts to position sports as a business were beginning to produce results.

Dare said the $7.5 million deal demonstrated the commercial potential of Nigerian football and the benefits of sustained reforms in the sector.

He noted that the NPFL, clubs, owners and other stakeholders had continued with the reform process despite challenges encountered over the past three years.

According to Dare, the Federal Government’s decision about four and a half years ago to classify sports as a business under the National Sports Policy, alongside a 10-year football master plan, was aimed at developing the sector, attracting foreign investment, improving branding and increasing the commercial value of Nigerian football.

He also highlighted the increase in government funding for sports, with budgetary allocations rising from N1.9 billion to N76 billion.

However, Dare cautioned that increased funding must be matched with reforms based on international standards to ensure the sports industry delivers sustainable value.

NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, described the sponsorship as a significant boost for Nigerian football, saying it would strengthen the NPFL and create greater opportunities for clubs and players.

He assured stakeholders that the NFF would continue supporting reforms aimed at improving the quality, visibility and commercial appeal of domestic football.

For EUROMATCH GROUP, Group Chairman Sadi Semih said the partnership was more than a commercial arrangement, describing the three-year deal as a strategic investment in Nigerian football and an opportunity to support the league’s growth and international profile.

The unveiling was attended by several prominent figures in Nigerian football, including former Super Eagles players Daniel Amokachi, Samson Siasia, Austin Eguavoen and Brown Ideye.

With 60 per cent of the sponsorship revenue allocated to clubs, the agreement could significantly alter the NPFL’s financial structure, provided the funds are transparently managed and invested in player welfare, facilities, administration and the overall development of the league.

The 2026/27 season will therefore provide an important test of whether the NPFL can translate the new investment into a more sustainable and commercially competitive domestic football league.
