NYSC, NBA condemn assault on Corps member

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has condemned the assault on a corps member, Jennifer Elobor, by local security operatives in Anambra State.

In a statement on Wednesday, NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, described the incident as “unacceptable and dehumanising,” stressing that no justification could warrant such an act.

A video that surfaced days earlier showed members of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, known locally as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, beating and stripping Elobor in the Oba community of Idemili South Local Government Area. The operatives accused her and other corps members of internet fraud.

The Anambra State Government confirmed on Tuesday that it had arrested the vigilante operatives and launched an investigation. NYSC welcomed the move, pledging full support for the police investigation and promising assistance to help the corps member overcome the psychological and emotional trauma.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) demanded the prosecution of those involved, describing the assault as “inhumane.” NBA President Afam Osigwe and National Secretary Mobolaji Ojibara stressed that justice must be served to redress the victim and deter future abuses.
