More than 200 residents of Moro Community in Osun State have benefited from free medical care and surgical procedures provided by medical students of Obafemi Awolowo University.
The intervention was carried out by the IFUMSA Health Awareness Club under the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students’ Association as part of its annual community health outreach.
Around 90 students drawn from the medical, dental and pharmacy departments participated in the exercise, supported by two surgeons and three perioperative nurses from the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex.
According to the Chairperson of the Health Awareness Club, Oladipupo Ayomipo, the initiative was organised as part of the students’ commitment to giving back to the community.
She explained that the financial burden associated with healthcare often prevents people from receiving basic medical attention, making outreach programmes necessary.
“We know healthcare is generally expensive and people pay out-of-pocket to be able to access basic healthcare services.
“This is why we continually make efforts to keep up with the project, and this year, we planned to make another impact in the lives of people in Moro Community,” she said.
The Local Organising Committee Chairperson, Aboderin Oluwatobiloba, said the programme sought to ensure that residents could receive essential healthcare without their economic circumstances becoming a barrier.
“Basic healthcare services should be accessible to all, irrespective of their socioeconomic status,” Aboderin said.
Residents were offered several services, including blood pressure and blood sugar checks, HIV and hepatitis B screening, urinalysis, body mass index checks, dental consultations and medications.
The medical team also conducted free day-case surgeries, including procedures for lipoma, hernia, hydrocele and breast lumps.
Beneficiaries appreciated the students and medical professionals for bringing the healthcare intervention directly to their community.
The programme follows a similar outreach held by the club in Ede, Osun State, in 2025, where residents received free consultations, medications, dental and eye care, alongside health education.
