Obi criticises Tinubu over Presidential Jet purchase, poor healthcare

Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for purchasing a presidential jet while millions of Nigerians lack access to essential services, particularly healthcare.

Appearing on Sunday Politics, Obi declared that if elected president in 2027, he would lead with empathy and prudence, stating unequivocally that he would not spend billions on a private jet.

“If I become president, I will use resources effectively. I cannot buy a new jet. I don’t need one because you can go anywhere without a jet,” Obi said.

He condemned the ₦150 billion reportedly spent on a new aircraft when “80% of our primary health centres are non-functional.”

Security Not an Excuse for Luxury

When asked whether security concerns might justify the acquisition of a new jet for the president, Obi dismissed the argument, citing his own example as a former governor of Anambra State.

“For my first four years as governor, I drove a Peugeot 406. I never used bulletproof vehicles,” he said.

He added, “Nobody wants to kill you if you are doing the right thing. It’s when you’re doing wrong that you live in fear.”

Leadership Should Embody Sacrifice

Obi maintained that leadership must be rooted in sacrifice and compassion, insisting that leaders who genuinely care should not shield themselves from the struggles of the people.

“If your people are dying, you should be ready to die,” he stated.

‘A Country Without Compassion’

Lamenting the current administration, Obi said President Tinubu lacks the compassion Nigerians deserve from their leader.

“We have a country without compassion. Leadership without compassion is a minus—it’s harmful to the country,” he remarked.

He vowed to offer a leadership style anchored on empathy, should he win the 2027 presidential election.

“People want to get up and see a president that cares—a president who shows compassion,” he added.

Obi continues to position himself as a reform-minded alternative, contrasting his frugal, people-centred governance style with what he describes as the extravagance of the current administration.
