Ogun ends free entry to Olumo Rock over safety concerns

The Ogun State Government has declared that free access to the newly refurbished Olumo Rock Tourist Complex will conclude on Saturday, August 23, 2025, due to safety concerns arising from overcrowding.

According to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, the influx of visitors since the site’s reopening has far surpassed projections, occasionally creating risks to public safety.

“The unprecedented influx of visitors has raised concerns about overcrowding and public safety. At certain points, the volume of the crowd posed risks that could have resulted in a stampede but for the swift and professional intervention of security agencies and on-site personnel,” the statement read.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, who introduced the free entry initiative as part of efforts to reposition Olumo Rock as a world-class tourism destination, had aimed to give residents and tourists an opportunity to rediscover the landmark after its renovation.

According to the government, thousands of people took advantage of the initiative, which it described as a success in promoting the cultural and historical significance of the site.

“The remarkable response is a testament to the vision and commitment of His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in repositioning Olumo Rock as a world-class tourist destination of pride for Ogun State, Nigeria, and the global community,” the statement said.

With the initiative ending this weekend, the government said normal access procedures will resume immediately after August 23.

It also expressed gratitude to residents, tourists, and visitors for their overwhelming patronage and assured that measures are being taken to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for future guests.

“The Ogun State Government regrets any inconvenience this adjustment may cause and assures the public of its unwavering commitment to providing a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience for all visitors to the Olumo Rock Tourist Complex,” the statement added.
