Ogun Govt refutes claims of Tai Solarin University renaming

The Ogun State Government has dismissed circulating claims that Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), located in Ijagun, has been renamed Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona University of Education.

The clarification comes in the wake of reports alleging that the institution was renamed in honour of the late monarch and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

The government clarified that the Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology in Omu already serves as a tribute to the revered Awujale.

Providing historical context, the government explained that the institution began in 1977 as the Ogun State College of Education and was renamed Tai Solarin College of Education, Science and Technology in 1994.

In 2005, the institution evolved into Tai Solarin University of Education. This transition later raised concerns from the National Universities Commission (NUC) over the dual award of both NCE and degree programmes.

To address this, the previous administration separated the institutions—relocating the college of education to Omu, while the university in Ijagun retained its name.

In 2022, under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration, the college in Omu was officially renamed Sikiru Kayode Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology in honour of the late monarch.

The government emphasized that the governor’s recent comments during the 8th-day Fidau prayers for the late Awujale merely acknowledged existing efforts to honour the monarch and made no reference to any change in the university’s name, which is now under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government.
