One dead, seven injured as building collapses in Jigawa

One person has been confirmed dead while seven others were injured following the collapse of a building in Kabak village, Kirikasamma LGA of Jigawa state.

Musa Muhammad, the council’s information officer, confirmed the development in a statement issued through NAN on Sunday.

He explained that the collapse occurred around midnight on Friday after heavy rainfall.

“I gathered that seven persons got serious injuries while one person died at Kabak village in Kirikasamma Local Government Area,” Muhammad said.

“The incident happened midnight, Friday, after which five of the victims were hospitalised while the remaining two were treated and discharged.”

According to him, Muhammad Maji, chairman of the council, visited the site and donated N500,000 to cover the medical bills of the injured, along with N100,000 as emergency relief for the bereaved family.

This incident comes just a month after a three-storey building collapsed in Abuja’s Lifecamp area, where a Nigerien was pulled out alive after being trapped for nearly 10 hours.

In Lagos, such tragedies have become alarmingly frequent. Between January and June 2025 alone, at least six collapses were reported in the state, leading to 14 deaths and multiple injuries.

A recent report by TheCable noted that poor enforcement of building standards, use of substandard materials, and regulatory weaknesses continue to drive the crisis.

The Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) has recorded over 650 cases of building collapse nationwide since 1974, with Lagos accounting for more than half.

Ahmed Dangiwa, minister of housing and urban development, described the trend as a “national embarrassment” and pledged stricter monitoring.
