A man identified as Adejuwon Adekunle, popularly known as Asa, has been killed after being shot by gunmen near a recreation centre in the Dele Yes Sir community, Osogbo, Osun State.
Adekunle was reportedly attacked between 1:30am and 2am on Tuesday by unidentified assailants who were said to have tracked him to the area.
The motive behind the killing was still unclear at the time of filing this report.
However, the Osun State Police Command said preliminary investigations indicated that the attack could be cult-related, adding that efforts had begun to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident during a telephone interview with our correspondent on Tuesday. He said Adekunle was taken to a hospital after sustaining gunshot injuries but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Ojelabi said, “What happened in Dele Yes Sir is suspected to be a cult-related attack. The incident occurred around 2am on Tuesday.
“We got information that some armed men went to the area and started shooting sporadically. One Adejuwon Adekunle, aka Asa, was shot and rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His body was deposited at the morgue.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for a more discreet investigation. We have not made any arrest regarding the incident.”
Meanwhile, the police command disclosed that some individuals had been invited and questioned over the killing of an Accord Party chieftain, Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly called Emir Ajagungbade, in Ile-Ife on Sunday.
Ojelabi did not reveal the identities of those invited for questioning.
He said, “No arrest has been made yet. Some persons were invited by our operatives at the Criminal Investigation Department, and they were interrogated about the incident.”
PUNCH Metro reports that the police also recovered another body within the vicinity of Mayfair Motor Park, Ile-Ife, taking the number of people reportedly killed in the shooting at the park to two.
The development occurred shortly after Oyeyemi’s remains were buried at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo on Monday in accordance with traditional rites.
PUNCH Online reports that Oyeyemi was shot dead on Sunday during a confrontation involving him and a group led by another National Union of Road Transport Workers leader known by the nickname Sibi at Mayfair Motor Park.
A video circulating online showed Oyeyemi lying face down in a pool of blood inside a vehicle following the incident.
