Ousted Venezuelan leader expresses gratitude in first prison message

Ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro has thanked his supporters in what marks his first social media message since being detained in the United States, although it remains unclear who posted the message on his behalf.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were captured by US forces during a night raid in January, said they remain strong and calm despite their detention.

“We are well, steadfast, serene and in constant prayer,” the pair said in a statement shared via Maduro’s X account.

They added that messages of support have provided them with encouragement during their time in custody.

“We have received your communications, your messages, your emails, your letters and your prayers. Every word of love, every gesture of affection, every expression of support fills our souls and strengthens us spiritually.”

The couple has been held for nearly three months at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, reportedly without access to the internet or newspapers. According to sources, Maduro is limited to brief phone conversations with family members and legal representatives.

His son, Nicolas Maduro Guerra, has publicly stated that his father remains in good condition and continues to exercise while in detention.

Maduro, who has described himself as a “prisoner of war,” had not made any public statement since his court arraignment in New York on January 5.

“We feel a deep admiration for our people’s ability to remain united in difficult times, to express love, awareness, and solidarity, within Venezuela and beyond our borders,” the couple added.

He is currently facing multiple charges, including “narco-terrorism” conspiracy, drug trafficking offences, and weapons-related allegations, all of which he has denied.

Following his removal from power, Delcy Rodriguez assumed leadership and has since introduced policy reforms, including an amnesty for political prisoners and changes to the country’s oil and mining regulations.

Recent developments also indicate a gradual improvement in relations between Venezuela and the United States, with moves towards restoring diplomatic ties.
