Oyo school children’s rescue shows security is working — Oyo senator

The senator representing Oyo North Senatorial District, Abdulfatai Buhari, has said the rescue of 44 kidnapped schoolchildren and their teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State marks a major success for Nigerians and the country’s security system.

In a statement released in Ibadan on Saturday, Buhari also applauded President Bola Tinubu and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for their collaboration with security agencies, which led to the victims’ safe return.

He said, “The successful release of the 44 abducted schoolchildren and their teachers was made possible by the steadfast dedication and coordinated efforts of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde, working in collaboration with the Nigerian security agencies.

“On behalf of the good people of Oyo North Senatorial District, particularly Oriire Local Government Area, I thank President Bola Tinubu for his decisive leadership and prompt directives that ensured no stone was left unturned in securing the release of our children and their teachers.

“The freedom of these 44 abducted schoolchildren and their teachers in Oriire Local Government is a victory for all Nigerians and the nation’s security architecture.”

PUNCH Online reports that over 40 schoolchildren and their teachers were abducted during coordinated attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; L.A. Primary School; and Community Grammar School, Esiele, all located in Oriire Local Government Area, on May 15, 2026. They were freed on July 10, 2026, after spending 56 days in captivity.

Buhari further commended Governor Makinde for his active involvement, sustained consultations with relevant stakeholders and the support the state government provided throughout the victims’ ordeal.

The senator also praised the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, as well as vigilantes and local hunters for their courage, professionalism and dedication.

He said, “The officers on the ground displayed patriotism and resilience. Their commitment in the bush, on the highways and in intelligence gathering led to this successful outcome.”

Buhari celebrated the victims’ return with their families, describing the weeks of uncertainty as a difficult period for residents of Oyo North Senatorial District, Oyo State and the nation.

He encouraged the families to remain resilient and continue supporting one another as the rescued victims begin their recovery, while praying for their quick healing and good health.

“The government and relevant agencies will continue to monitor their well-being. This is not the end. The victims will receive further government attention, medical support and psychosocial care to help them fully reintegrate into society,” he assured.

The lawmaker also urged residents of Oyo North to stay alert and maintain close cooperation with security agencies.

He reaffirmed his resolve to work alongside the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government to enhance security measures and prevent similar incidents from occurring anywhere within the senatorial district.
