The Oyo State Government has invited members of the public to submit memoranda to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry investigating the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The government made the call in a statement published on its official handle on Tuesday, urging anyone with relevant information about the incident and the security response to come forward.
The commission is investigating the abduction of pupils, students and teachers from communities including Esinele and Yawota, as well as the security measures taken before, during and after the incident.
“The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the Oriire abduction is calling for public memoranda,” the statement said.
According to the government, the deadline for submitting memoranda is Friday, August 14, 2026.
Members of the public with information that could assist the inquiry were urged to submit their memoranda before the deadline.
The submissions are expected to include the contributor’s full name and contact details, alongside any supporting documents relevant to the information provided.
The government said physical submissions could be made at the Conference Room, Office of the Head of Service, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
Members of the public can also submit their memoranda electronically through oysjceoriireabduction@gmail.com.
39 students, seven teachers abducted
The Oriire abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed men reportedly attacked three schools in the local government area.
The affected schools were Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele; Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; and L.A. Primary School.
The attack resulted in the abduction of 39 students and seven teachers, sparking widespread concern across Oyo State and beyond.
The victims spent 56 days in captivity before they were eventually rescued in July.
The rescue was announced by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said security agencies secured their release without making concessions to the abductors.
Following the incident, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
Makinde said the seriousness of the incident warranted scrutiny beyond domestic institutions.
Commission examines security response
The Judicial Commission of Inquiry is expected to examine not only the circumstances surrounding the abduction but also the response of security agencies before, during and after the attack.
The state government said the inquiry was part of efforts to establish what happened and identify lessons that could strengthen the protection of communities and schools.
“The Oyo State Government remains committed to the safety of every community,” the statement added.
The government therefore encouraged individuals with firsthand knowledge, relevant documents or other information capable of assisting the commission to make their submissions before the August 14 deadline.
