Peter Obi not desperate to be president like some politicians – Chimamanda Adichie

The acclaimed novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, has said her backing of Peter Obi, former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, stems from his humility and dedication to the country.

In an interview with Channels Television, Adichie described Obi as distinct from many politicians driven by a thirst for power.

“He doesn’t need to be president; he wants to be because he cares about Nigeria, but he doesn’t need to be. That is a very important distinction,” she said.

“There are people who are desperate to become president, not because they have any good intentions for the country, but because of their egos.”

Adichie explained that her support for the former Anambra governor is “rooted in my love for this country” and a belief that with capable leadership, Nigeria can improve.

She also said Obi’s approach to leadership — especially his sense of responsibility — sets him apart from others.

“Peter Obi is not a person who expects you to thank him for doing his job as a leader, because to him it’s his job,” she said.

“There’s a sense, I think, in Peter Obi that he’s accountable to the people. He doesn’t think that somehow, he will lord it over people.”

Adichie further described Obi as “one of the simplest men I have ever known”, noting that he has remained unchanged in his values over the years.

“The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same in terms of his values,” she said.

“He is genuine, consistent, and curious — qualities that I believe are essential in a leader.”

When asked how she would feel if Obi is not on the 2027 ballot, Adichie declined to comment.

The novelist was among Obi’s vocal supporters during the 2023 presidential campaign, showing her endorsement through social media, a public birthday message, and a dedicated video.

In 2022, she referred to him as “my big bro” and expressed confidence in his vision for Nigeria.

Following Obi’s loss to President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election, Adichie penned an open letter to then-U.S. President Joe Biden, raising concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.

In the letter, she argued that the election was riddled with “discrepancies and irregularities” that were overlooked by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

She was also seen at the presidential election tribunal in Abuja, showing her continued support for Obi.
