Peter Obi urges Nigerians to defend democracy, reject one-party system

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to stand up for the country’s democracy, cautioning against efforts to establish a one-party system.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Obi said members and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), along with other concerned Nigerians, are united in their commitment to protecting democratic values.

He noted that the future of Nigeria’s democracy rests on the collective resolve of citizens who prioritise unity, peace, and national security.

“We, members and leaders of the ADC, and other well-meaning Nigerians, lovers of democracy, are saying that our democracy must not be killed,” Obi stated.

He emphasised the importance of resisting any move toward a one-party structure, describing it as a danger to political diversity and democratic progress.

“We say no to a one-party system and for that today we’re calling out Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land,” he added.

Obi also reiterated his message of optimism, encouraging Nigerians to remain hopeful about the country’s future.

“A new Nigeria is possible,” he affirmed.
